<note: This is an exact replica of the one on my myspace account, i still can't be bothered to change it.>
Just returned from a marvellous weekend away at Reading! Oh it was fun!
So firstly i got dropped off there carrying WAY too much stuff! Got there and found out i had NO tent poles. My sister hadn't packed the tent away properly and when dad told me he had put the poles in, he meant in the boot, not the tent bag. Luckily there was space in another so i was sorted!
that night i got my AC/DC style school uniform on (hat and shorts and all!) and jigged round the campsite, i didn't drink a lot yet i REALLY don't remember much about the night! Other than that it was very muddy and for some reason i decided to wear my new flip flops (idiot). At about 3 i came home and started sleeping on my airbed outside, woke up freezing and bought it into the tent.
Friday i got up at 6 because i wanted to be at the front for Dopkick Murphys. I started queueing shortly after. after breakfast and an hour or so i realised no-one else was doing this queueing lark so i went back to camp. Got near the front for Do Me Bad Things who were better than i thought they would be. Then came the Goldie Lookin Chain! This a band i recommend you see even if you aren't really into rap (like me). Their shows are a complete laugh and the choruses are always easy to pick up "If ya leave me now can i monkey banana ya sisterrr? and ya best friend!" They REALLY shouldn't have lasted this long (over a year now!) but even about 10 months after getting the album i still love it. I know its dead uncool to admit that in many rock circles but screw that, if you can't enjoy 50000 people chanting 'your mothers got a penis' a little bit then may i suggest you remove your head from your arse. Next twas The Wedding Present, they were okay, a bit like REM but failed to wow the audience. But who cares because next it was DROPKICK MURPHYYYYYYSSSSSSSSS! A.K.A. the reason i went for the whole weekend instead of just the sunday. They opened with Your Spirits Alive and the whole place kicked right into action! Kens mike didn't seem to be working too well though, yet it was a great show. The setlist had a little too much new stuff i thought but then again i thought they had too short a set anyway! After this set my voice practically went, it still hasn't come back (Iron Maiden helped with that! more on them later!) also as always 'Forever' was absolutely stunning! Don't remember much of the rest of the day until QOTSA who were very good. I also admire Josh's guts to play an instrumental that hardly anyone would've heard from the desert sessions. Safe! I knew Killers would either be very good or bad, luckily they were the former and put on a stellar show!
Smile Like your inbred!
I've got Eggs and I've got some soldiers!
yeah those were my two variations on a few killers choruses
Watched a bit of Kasabian and Pixies, Pixies were Okay and Kasabian were a bit dull. Although i did get the bassists autograph for my mate during the day.
Pretty good tonight Friday was, I think i crawled back into my tent once it had got light. The nights activities included climbing on a moving lorry and riding it round the campsite until they threw us off, chilling out with Danny, Jon, christeen, and Jenny, Foy, Batman and his crew doing the hokey cokey and then following round some group bringing 80's to the masses! Arrived back at Silly o clock in the morning.
Saturday tends to be the not too good day as far as music is concerned! This year was better than most it must be said but still poor in places. The Dwarves were pretty ace, guitarist was stark bollock naked and it was cool to see Nick Olivieri (however its spelt). Razorlight were better than i expected them to be i must say! The lead singer reeks of Iggy Pop when he gets going but thats not too bad. Kings of Leon were pretty cool too. Went and watched a bit of Babyshambles and i have to say (thoughts on Pete aside) i just don't get it. They REALLY aren't that good! Almost every song was a Strokes, Ramones or Clash rip-off. They were far from dreadful, just not worth the hype (thanks NME!), also Pete isn't that great a performer either. So they smashed up their instruments at the end, erm so did the Dwarves, they got no column space! I just have a dislike for mediocre being touted as godlike. Had a peek at Bad Religion they had a good thing going on! Next it was on to the Foo Fighters. Stellar, hit packed and heartfelt set from Grohl and the boys! It was great when Dave and Taylor swapped places for a song. Apparently this was Daves 7th time playing the festival and he made a brilliant speech about why he loves Reading instead of all the others (noticed he didn't mention Donnington, coz its amazing), highlight was probably one by one, best of you or Monkey Wrench.
that night i jumped over some fire, watched some mad head on trolley jousting some of them even had fire on the front!
Sunday! today I suffered with a lot of what i called Bread and Butter syndrome. We all like Bread and Butter (all the bands bar one) but when you know there is a full sunday roast (Iron Maiden) after it the bread and butter kinda loses appeal. Anyway, saw a bit of Turbonegro, let down. Saw most of Alkaline Trio, just didn't have the X factor today. Watched bits of FFAF, okay but i can't listen to them too much. Also i noticed the singer has cut off his hair. Could he be trying to distance himself from the whole emo trend now its cutting edge coolness is waning? Dunno really, that was one of my thought. Or he just got pissed off with it. NOFX were pretty good, I just love how their set is so spontaneous and they do whatever they want and its still exciting, honest and sounds good! Iggy was a bit of a let down, went back to tent for a bit (REALLY getting restless waiting for IM now!) chilled until Manson came on (wanted to see Incubus but didnt). Manson was pretty good but the set kinda sagged in the middle. Kinda interesting there were no tits all weekend, then three pairs come on screen during manson! Also it was the first time i saw him do The Nobodies, the video for that was the only time he did kinda scare me!
The whole weekend is forgotten its time for Maiden.
In the break between MM and IM something showed just why Metal fans are the best. It was almost the ONLY time that weekend when there was a mass singalong to the music from the soundsystem during the bands set up. (Ace of Spades, Back in Black, Chop Suey and Ace of Spades). After setting up the ramps and everything they exploded onto the stage with Murders in the Rue Morgue the place is mental! A band thats been around this long shouldn't have this much energy! Bruce controls the audience and shows why he is one of the best frontmen around tearing around the place giving everything he has. The Trooper was stunning (as always) with Bruce up the top of the ramps with British flags while Janick, Dace and Adrian (guitars) and Steve (Bass) stand at front of stage showing just how good they are! Also Steves son come out with an Eddy mask and british flag which was a cool moment. Phantom of the Opera OH MY monkey banana! like Bruce said, if you don't feel the vibes on that your DNA simply does not enjoy heavy metal and you should therefore leave and go listen to some boy band. Revelations also caned! They did the usuals Run to the Hills, Hallowed be Thy Name, Number Of The Beast and Iron Maiden (remember it was only 1st 4 albums so no Fear of The Dark or 2 mins 2 midnight etc.) and did a barnstorming closer of Running Free and Sanctuary. Dancing around to Always look on the bright side of life afterwards hugging whoever!
I said it would happen, Maiden would OWN that festival and make every other band look average. No-one believed me and they monkey bananaing well did. People look down on bands like Maiden, they're not trendy, they have strange zombies on all their artwork. Screw them. cool or not Maiden played with more Passion, energy, talent and power than any flavour of the week dull NME crap or whoever Kerrang is calling the saviours of rock. Good music comes from the soul and there was a lot of that!
God Save the Queen!
