Sorry Tool, but Maiden have claimed the BEST LIVE BAND ON THE PLANET accolade off you!
Last night was in fact the best gig i have seen in my life! (well individual set, overall the unholy alliance was still better). Ever! That beats Tool (thats right, after 3 years at the top they lost their crown) Metallica, Motorhead, Green Day, DKM's, Slayer, Slipknot, Chili Peppers, Sabbath and any other band you care to mention that i have seen!
I got to Hammersmith abouuuut 5ish and went straight to the front, i managed to worm my way onto the barrier on the left. Voodoo Six and Pig Iron were support band, Voodoo six were a cross between Pantera and early AC/DC with these dirty riffs with chords that just hang in the air(WHY do so few bands do that!). Pig Iron were this pretty good biker band, but by then i was wetting myself in anticipation of what comes after!
And WOW what did come after!
I think i have explained this before, but let me retell (please do!). Iron Maiden do not simply come onto the stage (most bands) or saunter on like a God knowing they don't have to make an effort and the audience will love them anyway (Pete Doherty). THEY EXPLODE onto the stage! BANG! into Murders in the Rue Morgue! With much vigour as due to it being the end of the early days tour it will probably be the last time they play it (as well as a few others). Prowler came shortly after with The Trooper following. I got some class photo's on my camera of Bruce when he was on the ramps, i could almost reach out and touch the one on the left. Thats another thing Maiden couldn't actually play a smaller venue than Hammersmith with their full stage show! As always, the Trooper was a stonker!
Do i need to tell you how crazy the place went for Run to The Hills (being played mid-set, like the old days for this tour). didn't think so
at some point during Revelations i realised it was in fact the best show i had ever seen! It combined the excitement of the first time i ever saw Slipknot (something i haven't felt since) with all the passion that an Iron Maiden show has, add in the intimacy of the venue (especially for such a huge band) and being able to look into their eyes as they played. PLUS i touched the flag during The Trooper! All that and it was for a VERY worthwhile cause (their ex drummer has MS, so does a family friend of mine.) Moreover i did a quick check and on average only about one in 8 people didn't have a Maiden shirt on, gave it a real family atmosphere that you don't get with many HUGE bands.
They played the same set as Reading so again i didn't properly know all the songs but they were still almighty. Die with Your Boots On and Murders in the Rue Morgue especially! Yet once again Phantom Of The Opera WAS the highlight of the night. Its just one of those songs that was MADE for the live arena! "We've just been over to America where a lot of the audience hadn't heard us before, we turned up and said Have some of this!"
They had this big weird thing (not Eddie) come at the side to on Number of The Beast (i presume it was 'the beast') but it was a bit crap, luckily the song MORE THAN makes up for it!
It felt so wonderfully weird to be SO close to the band as usually they are at festivals or air hanger sized venues. In fairness those are the types of venues that Maiden is best suited for on a full time basis, but nuggets like this every now and again are a godsend. I was airbassing with Steve Harries just in front of me!
They got Clive Burr (the ex drummer who it was all for) out in front of the crowd after Iron Maiden and before the encore which got EASILY the loudest cheer of the night and he was obviously very touched by this.
Afterwhich they played a complete teardown of an encore Running Free, Drifters and the almighty Sanctuary. Your ears ring, legs feel like Jelly and neck aches. Small price to pay for the closest thing to an orgasm without any sexual action!
I also managed to catch Dave Murrays wrist band and one of his plectrums! they are now wrapped around Corey Taylors bottle of water which i got at Hammersmith in October.
All thats left now is to wait until next year for a new album and tour! OH YES!
